This will be a review of the history of twentieth century socialism and the socialist movement from the Russian Revolution to the Battle of Seattle with emphasis on the evolution of the socialist movement, the labor movement and other social movements in the United States. It is virtually impossible not to have a point of view of these historical events, which is bound to be controversial. Issues addressed will include the emergence of Trotskyism, Third Period Communism, the Popular Front, Industrial Unionism in the United States, the wartime strike wave, Taft Hartley and retreat of labor, Communist victories in China and Cuba, the retreat of democratic socialism, labor struggles in eastern Europe, the rise of the New Left, emergence of the New Communist Movement, New Left and organized Labor and the collapse of the Communist social system. Emphasis will be placed on those areas of particular interest to the audience.
Gabe Gabrielsky has been a socialist for more than 50 years. Gabe joined the Socialist Party of America and the Young People’s Socialist League on March 1, 1964, his 21st birthday as his first adult act. Subsequently he has been a member of the Student Peace Union, the Congress of Racial Equality, the American Socialist Organizing Committee, the Philadelphia Socialist Club, the Independent Socialist Clubs of America, the Peace and Freedom Party, Students for a Democratic Society, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the International Socialists, the International Union of Electrical Workers, District 65, the American Federation of Teachers, the New America Movement, the National Education Association, the Green Party, UNITE HERE and the International Socialist Organization. Gabe is currently a member of Democratic Socialists of America, Solidarity: A Socialist, Feminist, Antiracist Organization and the Socialist Party, USA.
