Reproductive Rights Must Be Guaranteed

by Greg Pason for U.S. Senate 2012

Republican US Senate candidate Todd Akin’s statement on “legitimate rape” and rejection of the right to abortion in any situation should not come as a surprise to anyone who has followed the rightward drift of the Republican Party and the increased control of the Party by the anti-choice lobby.

The Democrats have responded with outrage, but their rhetoric does not match their actions. Time and time again the Democrats have found ways to allow their own anti-choice lobby to hijack full reproductive rights for women. The most recent example is the inclusion of the“ Hyde Amendment” in the so-called “Affordable Care Act.” President Obama caved to Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan’s amendment which prohibits use of Federal funds “to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion” except in cases of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother.” This reactionary language is now in the healthcare bill.

The Socialist Party stands for full reproductive rights for women. We demand full support for every woman’s right to choose when, if, and how to have children, including the right to free abortion on demand at any stage of pregnancy, without interference or coercion. Clinics providing abortion services must have the full protection of the law.

We call for the repeal of the Hyde Amendment and all other legislation that limits access to abortion services, thus denying “the right to choose” to millions of women, particularly low-income women, women of color, and young women. We demand full reproductive freedom for all women by removing all discriminating barriers to reproductive rights and reproductive health care.

As a candidate for US Senate I will promote and campaign on this platform and stand up for the right to healthcare, including all reproductive services for women, for all.
