This book changed my life. I cried many times while reading it. Though it’s a theoretical book, it doesn’t read like one. For me, bell hooks’ theory of socialist feminism organized all the disparate thoughts I’d juggled inside my brain and often expressed outwardly with terrible clumsiness. bell hooks gave my thoughts power and form. The book provides a holistic analysis of feminism — examining it from the deep roots of systemic problems inherent in patriarchal capitalist systems — and challenges the reader to think about and express feminism in the context of the whole rather than as a separate issue that’s solely the domain of women — particularly white bourgeois women who have dominated feminist rhetoric for so long. Her analysis of the impact of sexism on men is particularly enlightening. I highly recommend this book for everyone!
